CardonomicsCard Capture · prototype 0.4
Measure the card you pulled
One card at a time: the front, the back, then each corner up close, and if you like each edge up close and a size check. The guide reads the card's outline and the phone's level live, and takes each shot itself when the phone is flat, square and still. You get centering, corners, edges and the cut measured, each against the published grading bands. It's an estimate from measurements, not a grade.
Out of the holder. Sleeves and top loaders add glare and hide the edges.
Plain surface that contrasts with the border. A dark mat for white borders, a light one for black or dark borders; a mid-grey mat suits almost any card. No wood grain or patterns.
Even light from the side or above, no flash. Move the light if the guide reports glare.
Hold the phone upright, straight over the card, about a hand's width above it.
Front
Starting camera…
—tilt
Lay the phone flat on the table, screen up, next to the card. Then tap Zero.
This measures how far the table itself is off level, so the guide reads tilt against the table, not the room. If your phone rocks on its camera bump, put it in a case first.
Front captured
Now the corners, up close
The full photo can't see fine whitening or small chips. A close-up of each corner can: it's matched to the full photo to know its scale, then measured.
Same surface, same light. A mid-grey or dark mat shows white stock best; light from the side, no flash.
Hold the phone flat over the corner, as close as it will focus. Put the corner on the cross; the guide tells you when it's close enough and takes the shot.
A white border hides whitening. The result will say so rather than guess.
The edges, up close
The full photo can't tell the top bands apart on the edges. Close-ups along each edge can: a few overlapping shots per edge, each matched to the full photo to know its scale and where along the edge it is.
Same surface, same light. A mid-grey or dark mat shows white stock best.
Hold the phone flat over the edge, as close as it will focus. Put the edge on the dashed line; the guide says which way to slide along it and takes each shot itself.
A white border hides whitening. The result will say so rather than guess.
Size check
A photo has no scale of its own. A card of known size beside yours gives one: any loyalty, gift or hotel key card is made to bank-card size (85.60 × 53.98 mm) to within about a tenth of a millimetre.
your cardgapreference card, face down
Your card above, the reference card below it, turned sideways (long side across), both on the same flat surface.
Lay the reference card face down, and leave a finger's width of plain surface between them. The surface should contrast with the reference card's back: a dark mat for a white back, a light one for a dark back.
Use a loyalty, gift or key card. The back of a bank card shows its security code. The photo is measured and then thrown away: only the two outlines' measurements are kept.
You get the card's width and height, plus or minus the reference card's own tolerance and the measurement's. Size isn't graded, and a size that's off is a reason to look closer, not proof of trimming.
Measured
Every number below comes from these straightened photos and the close-ups. Nothing has left your phone.
The capture record is a file of every measurement and how each photo was taken, with no photos and nothing personal in it. It stays on this phone unless you share it.
